Wreck of United States Submarine Found After 80 Years
The wreckage of a United States Navy submarine has been found. It was lost in the depths of the ocean during the 2nd World War 80 years ago.
The BBC reported on Friday (May 24) that the USS Harder submarine was discovered near Luzon Island in the northern part of the Philippines, lying under 3,000 feet of water.
The submarine sank on 29 August 1944 with a crew of 79 men.
Before sinking, the submarine sank three Japanese destroyers and inflicted heavy damage on two more destroyers within four days, forcing Japan to change its war plan, which later contributed to Japan losing the war.
"The submarine was lost when the war was won," said retired Admiral Samuel J. Cox, head of the United States Navy's Historic and Heritage Command. "We must not forget that to win there is a price to pay. As freedom has to pay."
The Pacific Ocean Philippines was one of the major battlefields during the 2nd World War. At that time, US forces fought a massive war to regain control of the Philippines from Japan.
There are many 2nd World War ships lying beneath the waters of the Philippines.
This submarine, named Harder, was found by the 'Lost52 Project', an agency working to find 52 US submarines that were lost during the 2nd World War. The submarine named Harder was found largely intact.
